I've come across people who claim Satanism as their religion, and have probably insulted them by the way I talk about it, but I don't mean to. It's only that I get very confused about what it's all about. I tried going 'to the source' by talking to people on line, but simply became more confused. Does Satanism literally refer to the 'Satan' of the Christian Bible, or is he supposed to be some sort of separate entity? Do Satanists be believe that the Christian God exists? Am I correct in assuming that they believe Satan will win the battle of Armageddon referred to in the book of Revelations? What rituals are involved? What is the basic, founding belief? I would be grateful for any input. Especially if you happen to be a Satanist.

Ack! more google searches, and now I'm seing incidences of 'ritual killings' by people who practiced 'Satanism'.... Is this story ligitamite? got it off of factnet.org www.factnet.org/cults/satanism/index.htmlThese people's interpretation of Satanism seems far afield of the article at the600club.com mentioned above which seems--if my understanding is correct--to advocate a reliance on the self, and disbelief in the unobservable as among the primary beliefs. WHAT is going on here? the article (at www.the600club.com/satanism/) mentions this in a paragraph under the heading 'A Crash Couse History of Modern Satanism': In some literature Satanism is regarded as a literal worship of various Demons and Deity’s, other times it shows up as Witchcraft where practitioners make pacts with Satan and are thus granted their powers. Yet in other forms, Satanism is akin to Voodoo, and even ancient Pagans were regarded as Satanists who again were given powers by “Satan.” Nearly all of these cases are incorrect and had nothing to do with the true term “Satan” or Modern Satanism.
Okay...so a 'Satanist' can be 1.) a 'devil-worshipor' 2.) a 'witch' 3.)a Voodoo practiciner 4.)a folower of an 'ancient Pagan' {Earth Based?} religion 5.)a follower of the philosophical anti-religion mentioned in the article quoted ....what? so if a person walks up to me and says "Hi! I'm a Satanist!" (okay, so not a typical way to start a converstaion...just work with me here) What can I infer about said person's beliefs, and how can I work out their specific genre of Satanism without being rude or abnoxious? This Satanism label is confusing. It's like 'Christian'. Someone walks up to you and says that they're 'Christian' you don't know whether they're Roman Catholic or a member of the K.K.K. ...unless they're not white. Then they're probably not with the K.K.K...

LaVeyan Satanists don't believe in the Christian God or Satan; satan is just a handy figurehead for the type of attitude/personality/whatever they wish to pursue. www.churchofsatan.com/home.html

I finished reading the Satanic Bible a little while ago (well, a few days ago, or weeks, I dont remember). LaVey goes through and completely excoriates organized religion, then goes on to set up his own version of organized religion. hypocrisy much?
Anyway, Satanism on the whole seems a philosophy centered around the self; self-indulgence, self-happiness, personal responsibility, etc. The complete opposite of group-oriented philosophies such as christianity, which revolve around self-less ness and self-sacrifice.
