sometimes I wonder if our concepts of good and evil aren't simply oversimplifications of ethics and social norms... what do you think?

"good" is defined as simply being "desirable" or "beneficial" (by www.thefreedictionary.com anyway (it's got half a million definitions, but I'm paraphrasing because no one wants to read all that)), and "evil" is defined as anything "morally bad", "harmful", or "malicious". So, in a way they exist - obviously some things are beneficial, some things are detrimental, etc - but in another way it really doesn't, since what is harmful to one person might be helpful for another, and what is "bad" to one person might be "good" to another.

I agree with Jo on this. Everyone has some concept of good and evil. However, I do not see either one as a seperate entity. For me they are together in one form; two halves of the same sphere if you will. Good and Evil are concepts of morality and basically social standards to govern society. Everyone has their own view of good and evil. Christians choose to conect their concepts of good and evil with two seperate entities of being (The Devil and Yawe (God)) while some Pagans associate their concepts of good and evil with one entity of being that is equally both. Others take a philosophical point of view and place responsibility for good and evil on humans, and see them as aspects of the human psyche rather than a paranormal phenomenon that transcends the plane of existence that most of us are currenly occupying. The way I see it everyone has a little piece of this puzzle right. All human kind has to define for themselves the meaning of good and evil as well as how it exists for them. There is no one right or wrong answer just various pieces of a gargantuon puzzle. Good and Evil do battle everyday. Both clash each other anytime somone questions what is good and what is evil. Everytime someone begins to make a distinction between what the two mean for them personally and/ or spiritually. Ok this is getting really long so I'm going to let someone else make some comments on the subject matter. Blessed Be!
